How to choose your first enterprise AI workflow

Choose a bounded, measurable workflow before expanding automation across your organization.

Choose a handoff, not a department

Start with one repeated handoff: an order that fails between ERP and CRM, an evidence packet assembled for review, or a recurring document triage queue. Identify an owner, the input, the expected output, and what happens when the process fails. Broad goals such as “automate finance” hide too many different decisions.

Measure the current process

Record time spent, rework, missing information, and escalation frequency. Use a representative sample and keep the sample period visible. A useful pilot compares the same kind of work before and after the change. Avoid claiming savings from a demonstration alone.

Define permissions before choosing models

List the systems the workflow can read and the actions it can propose. Keep consequential writes behind an accountable reviewer until the behavior, rollback plan, and audit evidence have been evaluated. A model recommendation is not permission to execute.

Set an exit condition

Decide what evidence earns a next step: correct outputs on a defined sample, explicit failure handling, and a manager willing to own the review process. Document what remains manual. A narrow success is a better basis for expansion than an impressive unbounded demo.
